You can pickle more than pickles in pickling jars. The process of pickling was used to preserve foods mainly meats for when sailors went on long journeys. The goal was to keep the food fresher longer. The process involved boiling the pickling jars before the food and brine mix were put in and after to make sure as many germs and bad bacteria were killed. The brine mix was of salt and water (vinegar can also be used) which creates an acidic mix in which caused a fermentation process. Then they experimented with pickling other things and discovered this process created a whole new food and food taste that we now know today as pickled. And example is your pickled beets, and eggs, onions, you name it. Pickling jars and the pickling process were first introduced in the 1860’s. These jars could come in all sizes and shapes as well as colors. They are a bit different from your normal regular jars in that they have a more secure tight lid seal to keep air out completely.
